US Airways brings down fares to over 60 cities from McGhee Tyson

East Tennesseans for Airfare Competition (ETAC) joined US Airways and the Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority today to announce reduced rates from McGhee Tyson Airport to more than 60 cities across the United States and Canada. These cities include Boston; St. Louis; Charleston, South Carolina; Orlando, Florida; San Antonio; Phoenix; and San Diego, as well as Montreal, Toronto, and Ottawa, Canada.
“We have worked with US Airways for several years to address the high fares out of Knoxville,” said Danni Varlan, ETAC coordinator. “We are very excited about this announcement, and we hope that it will help our business community reach its desired destinations without having to travel to other cities to save money.”
Varlan also stressed the importance of supporting US Airways for their willingness to reduce airfares in an effort to help Knoxville-area travelers.
“We’ve seen this trend time and time again at the airport—one carrier lowers its fares, or a new, low-fare airline comes in, and as a result, rates fall across the board,” said Varlan.
But, historically, as rates drop, travelers often forget why the rates are lower, and they do not continue to support the airline that initiated the price decrease. In this situation, it could result in the airline having to raise their rates again, explained Varlan.
“And then we find ourselves in the same predicament. So we are urging people to support these fares by flying on US Airways, even when the rates drop with other airlines,” said Varlan. “Knoxville did an exceptional job at supporting Independence Air, and we were one of their top cities as a result. Although they were not able to survive the tough airline industry, Knoxville learned the importance of supporting the one who helped bring down the fares—I only hope we can do the same for US Airways.”
